Today’s fashion or 80’s fashion?

Oversized silhouettes, animal prints, ciao streetwear, elegant denim, and bold colors. All of these interesting trends made their way into dozens of shows and presentations at New York Fashion Week. These clothes will soon be arriving at fast-fashion retailers in only six months or less.

Labels including Balenciaga, Calvin Klein, and Marc Jacobs showed several roomie and supersized silhouettes for Spring 2018. They ranged from voluminous dresses and baggy sweaters at Coach, to roomy pants and gigantic tote bags at Proenza Schouler. Designers have declared that the era of body-hugging styles, favored by celebrities like Kim Kardashian West, is over.

While spring collections tend to be colorful, nothing compares to this neon, bright, 80’s inspired trend. Brandon Maxwell, a designer who in the past made mostly black dresses, embraced color at his show with hot pink, neon green, golden yellow, and candy red. The colors signaled confidence and boldness amid the city’s skies. In challenging times, designers and retailers rely on colors to lift spirits.

At New York Fashion Week, the designers most casual ensembles tended to look polished. Many designers and retailers in New York are tired of streetwear and are eager to say their goodbyes to the trend. Tom Ford said “I feel that fashion has somehow lost its way a bit and it is easy for all of us to be swept up in trends that have lost touch with what women and men want to actually wear. So, I did not want to make clothes that were ironic, or clever but simply clothes that were beautiful.”

Coach, Proenza Schouler and Zero + Maria Cornejo gave denim a new couture, turning the humble fabric into skirts, dresses, jumpsuits, and overcoats. Michael Kors showed a denim jacket with flower-gem buttons. While jeans have been a fixture of the runway, denim is being transformed into more formal looks, thus further blurring the line between casual and formal looks in fashion. Still, some firms still cannot un-see denims casual footprint, no matter how “elevated” it can become.

Many designers have stopped using fur, however they have fallen in love with animal prints. Calvin Klein 205W39NYC, Christian Siriano, and Baja East proposed pairing animal prints during the daytime with everything from tank tops to T-shirts and jeans or sneakers. What once seemed a daring style choice reserved solely for after dark is now being seen as a daring daytime look.

Am I willing to ditch my almost always neutral palette? I am not too sure about that. What are your thoughts about this bold new trend? Comment your opinions below.

LA Bans Fur Sales

On Tuesday, the Los Angeles City Council voted to ban the manufacturing of all fur clothing and accessories within city limits. Los Angeles is now the largest city in the United States to ban the sale on fur. This marks one of the most significant efforts to restrict these sales anywhere in the world. The law may include certain exemptions, such as fur worn for religious reasons and furs of animals caught by California Fish and Game license holders.

Paul Kortez, a council member who introduced the motion, hopes that this will influence and inspire other major U.S. cities to follow in Los Angeles’s footsteps. “Los Angeles is one of the fashion capitals of the world, and if we can do it here, we can do it anywhere and hopefully we will be an example for the rest of the country and the rest of the world,” Koretz said at a news conference before the vote, reported NBC Los Angeles.

Fur-free trends seems to be appearing more and more in the fashion industry. Major clothing brands such as Gucci, Burberry, Versace, Yoox Net-a-Porter, and TJX have recently announced fur-free policies. P.J. Smith, a senior manager of fashion policy at the nonprofit HSUS, is amazed at the momentum that the fur-free movement has seen in recent years. “I’ve been doing this job for about 10 years, and if you would have told me just two years ago that Gucci, Versace, Burberry, InStyle magazine, London Fashion Week, Norway, the Netherlands, São Paulo would be going fur-free, I wouldn’t have believed you,” Smith told The New York Times on Tuesday. “But it’s happening.”

Emmy’s Best Dressed 2018

Nominees, presenters, and even their guests came dressed to the nines at this Mondays Emmy Awards. The fashion bar has been set very high with these couture looks that came straight from New York Fashion Week’s Spring 2019 runway.

Keri Russell blew everyone out of the water with her daring, edgy, black gown. This dress included a plunging neckline and a high slit which really accentuated the actress’s slim figure. The bedazzled long-sleeve top brings the wow factor to this outfit while keeping it classy. Thanks to the sheer skirt with the feathers on top, Russell stood out from the flock, even though the dress is black. When wearing a black dress, especially at an event like the Emmy’s, it is important to have other elements included in the look that help make it more memorable. Due to the flattering belt, sparkle-full top, feathers, sheer skirt, high slit, and plunging neckline, there is no doubt that this gown swept everyone off their feet at this event.

Would you wear a corset?

An uncomfortable and breathtaking trend that started in the 16th Century has unexpectedly made its way back into fashion. Today, a waist trainer, known to some as a corset, is a latex undergarment that wraps tightly around one’s stomach to gradually form an hourglass figure. In 2015, this product came into Vogue when Kim Kardashian and her sisters were seen admiring the waist trainer on Instagram. These trainers are being used as weight loss aids due to the fact that they make you feel fuller faster and compress your midsection so much that you sweat while wearing it, causing you to burn unwanted calories. However, the waist trainer is riding on thin ice when it comes to comfort and fashion.

There are many mixed emotions about this new fashion and weight loss trend. Kate Proud, a small business owner in Australia said that after only 20 minutes of wearing the trainer she felt “very hot” and “like my internal organs were being squashed together.” However, Stephanie Rodriguez states that her trainer is like a “second skin.” After at first doubting this trend, the 34-year-old Chicago administrative assistant says that it is helping her improve her posture and reduce stomach fat.

Steve Ball, professor of exercise philosophy at the University of Missouri, says “in fitness, there is no quick fix.” He states that if the trainer is worn for extended periods of time, the constant external support can lead to weakness of the core ab muscles. Nevertheless, waist trainer companies, such as Hourglass Angel, state that those claims are unproven and blown out of proportion. Ruben Soto, president of Hourglass Angel, says that the many benefits of the waist trainer include a healthier posture, a thinner waist, feeling fuller faster, and a more confident and sexy feeling of the wearer.
