Today’s fashion or 80’s fashion?

Oversized silhouettes, animal prints, ciao streetwear, elegant denim, and bold colors. All of these interesting trends made their way into dozens of shows and presentations at New York Fashion Week. These clothes will soon be arriving at fast-fashion retailers in only six months or less.

Labels including Balenciaga, Calvin Klein, and Marc Jacobs showed several roomie and supersized silhouettes for Spring 2018. They ranged from voluminous dresses and baggy sweaters at Coach, to roomy pants and gigantic tote bags at Proenza Schouler. Designers have declared that the era of body-hugging styles, favored by celebrities like Kim Kardashian West, is over.

While spring collections tend to be colorful, nothing compares to this neon, bright, 80’s inspired trend. Brandon Maxwell, a designer who in the past made mostly black dresses, embraced color at his show with hot pink, neon green, golden yellow, and candy red. The colors signaled confidence and boldness amid the city’s skies. In challenging times, designers and retailers rely on colors to lift spirits.

At New York Fashion Week, the designers most casual ensembles tended to look polished. Many designers and retailers in New York are tired of streetwear and are eager to say their goodbyes to the trend. Tom Ford said “I feel that fashion has somehow lost its way a bit and it is easy for all of us to be swept up in trends that have lost touch with what women and men want to actually wear. So, I did not want to make clothes that were ironic, or clever but simply clothes that were beautiful.”

Coach, Proenza Schouler and Zero + Maria Cornejo gave denim a new couture, turning the humble fabric into skirts, dresses, jumpsuits, and overcoats. Michael Kors showed a denim jacket with flower-gem buttons. While jeans have been a fixture of the runway, denim is being transformed into more formal looks, thus further blurring the line between casual and formal looks in fashion. Still, some firms still cannot un-see denims casual footprint, no matter how “elevated” it can become.

Many designers have stopped using fur, however they have fallen in love with animal prints. Calvin Klein 205W39NYC, Christian Siriano, and Baja East proposed pairing animal prints during the daytime with everything from tank tops to T-shirts and jeans or sneakers. What once seemed a daring style choice reserved solely for after dark is now being seen as a daring daytime look.

Am I willing to ditch my almost always neutral palette? I am not too sure about that. What are your thoughts about this bold new trend? Comment your opinions below.
